My First Day in Braces

experiences of ArchWired readers

Miriam from Ireland

I am 25 year old from Sligo.  I have my braces on since 3rd June 2005.  I've only got them on the top at the moment (will get the bottom ones in a months time) the reason I got them is that I have a lot of spacing and I want to close the gaps.  In Ireland its quite expensive to get dental treatment, and as I graduated from college last year, I had to think financially about getting the braces on. People come up to me and say "Oh you must be a great singer" because of the gap, I wish I was but I have become more conscious of my teeth, my smile, and in order to increase my self confidence I knew this was the best way to go about it.

I found the first 2 days very painful, and was tearful, but the day after I went on a girly weekend and had a great boozing session, I have to admit though I was slightly paranoid incase some guys would comment, because some people don't think before they speak, the next night after I went out again WAHOOOO my mouth was actually ok, my gums don't hurt, Siobhain my orthodontist give me gel, etc. in case of discomfort, but I haven't found that I needed to use it, so that's great!!

I had found that my teeth felt like they were going to fall out, but that's just natural its the first time when your teeth have the braces on and they move. I think its incredible what braces can do for people, as I know quite a few that have had them and its changed them for the better both physically and mentally. So I have been told that I will have them for a year and a half, but no pain no gain.  They wont stop me from partying or doing anything different so I'm quite happy I decided to get it done.
