My First Day in Braces

experiences of ArchWired readers

Grace from Birmingham, UK

I’m 20 years old, and have never been happy with my lower teeth. They are very crowded and overlap each other, but I have always been too scared to get anything done about them.  I started university in a different city, and happened to mention that I didn’t like my teeth to my new dentist. He put me in touch with an orthodontist and next thing I knew I was agreeing to having braces.

I have never noticed how much I have an overjet until I saw the molds! My treatment is full braces (metal) and elastics and estimated time is 2 years. Spacers went in a week before the braces and man were they annoying?! So when the day I got my braces came, I was just excited to getting the spacers out! But I was very, very nervous about it all.

First they put on some really icky tasting glue and then bonded the brackets on. Next the arch wire went on and I chose purple ligatures (I figured since I had metal they were going to be pretty obvious anyway!) I could feel pressure but nothing major. They just felt funny in my mouth, very big and I felt really self conscious that other people were staring at them as I made my way back home on the bus. I was really worried about other people’s reactions to my braces, but to be honest no one seems to care! I’ve had a couple of comments but generally just people noting I have them. I’ve even had my first kiss with braces on!

It’s been two months now since I had them and they have been fine so far. Soft foods for a couple of weeks but fine since. I just can’t wait to have them off and have a perfect smile!
