My First Day in Braces

Anne from California

I was very excited, nervous, and scared when I walked into the orthodontist's office this morning, I didn't know what to expect. They immediately sat me down into a chair, and put the cheek retractor in. When the assistant tried to turn on the suction tube (I'm sure that has a better name), a minimal blow of air passed through. The doctor and about 3 of the assistants were pushing buttons, opening cabinets, trying to figure out what was wrong, but they just couldn't fix it. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there with the cheek retractor, watching all the faces go by up above me.

Finally, the assistant took out the cheek retractor and moved me to another chair, apologizing. When they pumiced my teeth, I didn't feel much, just the fact that my teeth were cold and dry. They applied the glue and the brackets after putting some fluoride on my teeth. When they removed the cheek retractor, and even though it felt good to have my lips back to normal, the scratchiness of the brackets was not a great feeling. I chose metal braces on top and bottom, and after finally closing my mouth, I was given a piece of paper with different little rubber ties so I could choose the colors for my braces. I choose "pearl", which was some tooth-colored band.

When I saw my mouth in the mirror, I was shocked! The braces looked so big and clunky in my mouth. I hope I get used to this... I haven't had any pain yet, just the regular feeling of pressure. I hope it stays this way! Good luck to all of the bracefaces like me! :-)
