My first day in braces
was a big shock to me because the day was only supposed to be
a consult appointment. Due to some work situation I had to
cancel my appointment for a consultation the week prior. I
have been throwing the idea of straightening my top teeth
around for a few months now. I have one tooth which is sitting
sideways a little behind my front teeth. The look of it
bothers me as well as knowing it would be easier to clean and
less prone to cavities if it was inline with the rest of
them.
My consult appointment
was scheduled for 11 am and was going to last about an hour. I
took my boyfriend who has been very supportive through all my
contemplations of actually doing this. My boyfriend's parents
recommended the practice after using it on both of their
children and I have a lot of other people speak highly of it.
I was only in the waiting room for 5 minutes and I went back
to the conference room to talk about what I was looking
for.
The ortho showed me the
types of braces they offered and took a look in my mouth. He
asked me if I was interested in Invisalign. I said I was not,
I just didn't think it would be something I would like and if
I did not like them and stopped wearing them it would be a
waste of money. I told him I was interested in the ceramic
braces since I am an adult and I am thinking of a career
change so I would be doing interviews and such. He told me he
could have me in and out of braces in less than a year. I
asked him how soon the process could start because I look at
it as the sooner I start the sooner I am done. He told me I
can start whenever I wanted and he could possibly do it after
they took the X-rays because they had two cancellations and I
would not be needing the molar bands. He just wanted to check
to make sure they had the ceramic braces on stock. I thought
about it and figured I was there and this way I could not back
out. I can be a chicken
with this kind of stuff. I opted to start that day.
After we took all the
impressions (yuck) and the X-rays, we started the process. A
million thoughts went through my head, what will everyone
think? Will I regret this? I can't believe it. The whole
brackets and wire application took about 20 minutes maybe 25.
They asked if I had wanted them to go out and get my boyfriend
so he could sit there and I declined -- let him be surprised.
I didn't get to look into the mirror at that point because I
had to go figure some other stuff out. I did get my boyfriend
and he thought I was wearing something to show him what I
would look like with them on. Boy, was he shocked!
Anyway, I went to work
that night and some people didn't even notice and some thought
I was wearing a retainer. My teeth were a bit sore for a few
days and I was scared to eat and break them. It's been a month
now and I am glad I did it. In a year I will have a great
smile. I keep counting down the days. |
